The Students Guide to Coffee

By Blake Egozi on December 7, 2016

With finals week quickly approaching, many students find themselves with little time and a lot to do. Like any desperate college student, you’ll probably need to turn to caffeine and lots of it. During the last few weeks of the semester we see a caffeine-induced pattern. The non-caffeine drinkers turn into coffee connoisseurs and the caffeine addicts double their intake. Sometimes it’s hard to choose the right drink with the perfect amount of caffeine. So when your study session turns into an all nighter, don’t worry coffee has got you covered. Here’s a students guide to coffee drinks so you have one less thing to be concerned about as you prepare for your tests.

Medium Roast Coffee

This is your average cup of coffee that you can order at any coffee shop. The medium cup is usually 16 oz. and contains around 310 mg of caffeine. Add a flavor, some cream and sugar for a tasty treat or some almond milk for a healthy version. You can’t go wrong with the average iced or hot coffee because it not only tastes great but it also contains enough caffeine to get you through the day.

Red Eye

If you normally drink a cup of coffee on the daily, you might be looking for an even stronger fix during finals season. A Red Eye is regular coffee, iced or hot, with a single shot of espresso added in. This can contain around 460 mg of caffeine and is one of the most caffeinated drinks you can order. Any real coffee lover will enjoy this drink and the kick it brings.

Latte

You can’t go wrong with an Iced or hot latte. Latte’s include espresso and milk and can be flavored with vanilla or even mocha. Latte’s have around 150 mg of coffee depending on the size. This is the perfect drink for people who don’t love the taste of strong coffee and just need some caffeine to get them through the study session.

Cappuccino

A cappuccino is espresso and steamed milk with an excess of foam at the top. It contains about 150 mg of caffeine and is a tasty drink usually served hot. Order this if you are bored of your usual latte but still want that espresso boost.

Decaf Coffee

Prior to popular belief, decaf coffee does contain caffeine and can be a great drink to order late at night or if you have a low tolerance for caffeine. A normal 16oz. decaf coffee can have around 100mg of caffeine. This can also be the drink to get if you’ve already maxed out on your caffeine intake for the day but just generally love the taste of coffee.

Expresso Shot

If you are really in a rush or just need the quickest pick me up possible, you might be interested in a shot of espresso. A shot of espresso can be up to 170 mg of caffeine with only one ounce of liquid.

Café Cubano

Cuban coffee is another favorite that has a unique flavor but has the same effects as an espresso shot. Since they do not serve this specialty coffee at just any coffee shop, it sometimes gets forgotten. A Cuban coffee is small and has around 150 mg of caffeine. The special way it is made gives it a sweet yet strong taste that will absolutely give your brain that wakeup call it needs to study.

Macchiato

A macchiato is a stronger tasting version of a latte. It has two shots of espresso that are poured over a swirl of flavor combined with milk and topped off with a layer of foam. A macchiato has around 300 mg of caffeine and can be a fun new drink to try while your stuck at the library studying.

Chai Latte

A chai latte is the best drink for people who aren’t the biggest coffee fans. This combines chai tea with steamed milk for an impeccably tasty drink. This latte has 95 mg of caffeine in a typical 16 oz. drink. Get it iced or hot at any time of the day and it will be a great alternative to coffee to keep you up and focused.

Matcha Green Tea latte

Another great alternative to coffee is a green tea latte. Just like a chai tea latte, this drink is brewed green tea either hot or iced combined with steamed milk of your choice to create a tasty treat. This drink has around 80 mg of caffeine. While it is not the strongest option, it is really satisfying and actually healthy.
