Thanksgiving Desserts You Wish to Take Back to Campus

By Daphne Britt on November 19, 2016

For college students, having a healthy home cooked meal, including a dessert, will always remain a necessity whenever we go home to visit our families for Thanksgiving break, which will be here soon. Since Thanksgiving is only a few days away that gives us little time to think of the wonderful different foods we will be eating when we are with our families.

My focus is not only on the main dishes themselves, but on the desserts too. I wish I could bring back all my favorite Thanksgiving foods to Florida State University but I can’t bake as extraordinarily as my grandmother and uncle. Plus I’m quite sure my parents would not approve, so here is my pick for the top five Thanksgiving desserts you wish to take back to campus!

Sweet Potato Pie

This amazing treat is my number one favorite dessert to have after Thanksgiving dinner because it has the most delicious taste that balances sweet with salty. Even though it has plenty of carbs, you can easily substitute certain ingredients such as butter and whole milk to make it healthier.

Trust me when I say I plan on asking my grandmother to make this just for me! The taste of sweet potato and cinnamon will have you wanting seconds after you take a bite of this decadent pie. If you’re as excited as I am to try this dessert and can’t wait to bring it back to campus, then get the recipe at allrecipes.com.

Now I know this is another type of pie for dessert but people do have a preference. Even though pumpkin pie is not my cup of tea, this particular pie is very popular during the holidays as well as on college campuses (i.e. pumpkin spice). But just like the sweet potato pie, you can change any ingredient that’s used in the recipe. If you can’t wait until Thanksgiving to have a slice of this spiced pumpkin pie, you can get the recipe at www.foodnetwork.com.

Red Velvet Cake

My favorite type of cake for literally any occasion, but very special on Thanksgiving Day, is red velvet cake without the pecans or any other kind of nut that is sprinkled on top of the cake (yes I’m very picky). This particular cake is very popular in the south and is a favorite in my family.

The taste of cocoa and cream cheese frosting is a beautiful combination. But, if you want healthier ingredients, you can use less sugar and butter when making this mouthwatering cake. I will definitely make sure I get my uncle to make this decadent dessert. If you want to make your own version, get the recipe at allrecipes.com.

Sweet Potato Cheesecake

What I love about this dessert is that it combines two of my favorite desserts, sweet potato and cheesecake, into one tasty treat called sweet potato cheesecake. Now I know you’re probably wondering, how is this a Thanksgiving dessert? It’s a Thanksgiving dessert because every year my sister and I hope our uncle makes this because we don’t know how.

The dessert is very popular in my family and my uncle uses his very own recipe when making this particular treat. Hopefully I’ll be able to learn how to make his recipe someday, but for now I will stick with enjoying the dessert. This delicious treat has many calories, but the ingredient can be exchanged with healthy ones and can be made with less sugar. If you’re excited like myself and love this dessert as much as I do, then make sure you try it over Thanksgiving break.

Ice Cream

Everyone knows that you can’t have dessert without ice cream and my favorite kind of ice cream to eat after Thanksgiving dinner, is Breyers Vanilla ice cream. Not only is it good when eaten by itself, but it also makes an amazing addition when added to other desserts such as red velvet cake, fudge brownies, and chocolate chip cookies.

But, what’s so great about ice cream is that you don’t have to buy it, you can make it from scratch too if you prefer a healthier route. Even though you don’t have to bring this particular dessert back to campus because you can buy one from your local market, it’s still a delicious treat to indulge in (just remember not to eat it too fast or you’ll get brain freeze). With a variety of many different flavors for your liking, ice cream is the perfect ending to a Thanksgiving dinner.

If you’re as excited for Thanksgiving as I am, make sure you get the chance to indulge in your favorite holiday desserts!
