Dressing for Success at the Workplace

By Amanda Cohen on November 13, 2016

Even though the weather has been pretty inconsistent, fall is here and it is time to dress for the occasion! It’s easy to dress for class, but what about when it comes to “the real world?”

How do you dress properly for that occasion? How do you maintain your own unique style while still dressing appropriately for work? Well, that’s what I’m here for! Keep on reading if you want to learn how to dress to impress and be the trendiest woman at your workplace!

A-Line Midi Dresses

A-line midi dresses are perfect for the office for a variety of reasons: (1) they aren’t too short, (2) they aren’t too tight, (3) they are extremely feminine, and (4) they are trendy, stylish, and appropriate for the workplace!

Since it is fall, you want to stick to more neutral, darker colors. I would go for black, brown, grey, burgundy, or a dark olive green. I would shy away from the patterns when choosing a dress because you don’t want to look too eccentric at work.

Blazers

If anything, blazers are more of an accessory rather than just an article of clothing (unless you are opting to wear a pantsuit, which I will talk about later). Blazers are extremely trendy right now, and they keep you nice and warm when the office gets chilly! There are two types of ways you can wear blazers: somewhat fitted around the waist, or loose.

When I say “fitted,” I don’t mean skin tight, I’m talking about a blazer that cinches a little bit at the waist. It makes for a more feminine look, but it does not look like you are trying to wear something skin-tight. If you are wearing an A-line dress, it is sometimes nice to wear it with a blazer that is a little bit longer and not as fitted.

When buying a blazer, you want to go for the same color scheme as I said for the A-line dresses, but you do have more room to be more creative if you are wearing a black or grey outfit. For example, an exceptional combination is a black A-line dress with a burgundy blazer.

Pantsuit

Whether you like Hillary Clinton or not, I think we can all agree that she is the queen of pantsuits. However, I feel that sometimes her pantsuits are a little outdated and I think that as young college students we should put a younger spin on them!

Unlike what I said above, blazers are a key component of a fantastic pantsuit. When choosing a pantsuit, you want to buy one that has a blazer that is cinched at the waist and a pair of slacks that are loose, but accentuate an hourglass-shaped figure. Even though pantsuits are a bit pricier, I recommend spending the extra money on them because you don’t want to buy something that will fall apart after a few days.

Now, the pants and the blazer are usually bought together, but what do you wear underneath the blazer? Well, for the fall I would go for a sheer long-sleeve top that is cream-colored. I would buy a short-sleeve version as well just in case the weather continues to be this unpredictable. Here are some websites to check out when looking for a fun, appropriate pantsuit!

Boots and Booties

Boots and booties are perfect for any Fall day outfit, but they are even more perfect for a workplace outfit. I hate wearing anything that has a heel, but the truth of the matter is that heels are extremely flattering and complete just about any outfit.

However, when you are walking from meeting to meeting, you want to be comfortable. Everyone should honestly have a few pairs of boots and booties in their closets, but it is essential to have a pair of suede boots or booties and a pair of leather boots or booties. You really can’t go wrong with black, brown, and/or grey boots and booties.

With these tips, I promise you will be voted best-dressed at your workplace (and you may even get a bonus … just kidding, but wouldn’t that be nice)?! Just remember to stay away from too-short of skirts and dresses, and make sure that you stay from anything that is super tight!

Business-casual attire is becoming more and more popular, and you will get tons of use out of the items listed above.
